How To Spot Toxic Skincare Products By Looking At The Label

According to the New York Times, the jury in a Missouri circuit court awarded $4.14 billion in punitive damages and $550 million in compensatory damages to the women, who had accused the company of failing to warn them about cancer risks associated with it's baby and body powders “.

Think about this, it takes JUST 26 seconds for the ingredients in body care to get into our bloodstream. Can you imagine that?

Your Skin is the largest organ of the body. Just like the heart, liver and other organs, it should be treated with care and the right products.

Everything, this includes body lotions, butter, cleansers, oil and all that is applied on the skin goes directly into the bloodstream, would you want to have toxic chemicals in your bloodstream?

I’m sure you are wondering how you will be able to determine if a product has the right ingredients?

Well, that’s why I’m here, today, I will show you how to read the label on your products.

Before you purchase any body care product, pay close attention to the label and more importantly, the ingredients.

In recent times, a lot of body care brands have been “greenwashing” their products to get consumers who are concerned with the ingredients in their products to purchase.

Greenwashing is basically where a brand markets a product as natural but really chock full of chemicals.

1. The first 5 ingredients are the main components of the product, if the product says it’s cocoa butter infused or oatmeal infused and that ingredient is not in the first 5 but rather hidden in the middle of end of the ingredient list then you know it’s a marketing gimmick and not truly what it says on the label.

2. Another way to determine if a product is toxic is your inability to properly pronounce the ingredients on the label.

You should definitely consider researching it. A few of common hard to pronounce toxic ingredients are - distearyldimonium chloride, propylene glycol, etc

3. To determine when a body care product expires, look on the jar or bottle for jar with a tilted cover and numbers written in the jar. The number in the jar shows how long it can last.

Eg. If it’s  12, then it means the product is good for 12 months.

Take note of this as you do not want to be using a product that has expired. If this jar label isn’t on the jar and there is no indication of the expiration date, I would recommend keeping it for only 9 months just to be safe.

4. Another way to determine this is if the texture or color changes after a while, especially with natural products.

In summary, ensure you read the label of your products paying close attention to the ingredients, the expiration and ensuring the marketed ingredient is listed in the first 5 ingredients on the label

Did you read your product labels? What did you find? Please share!

In 2014, I tried a lip stain by a popular brand and it definitely stained my lips.

My lip had such a bad reaction that my lips turned black, itchy and swollen.

By God’s Grace, after almost a month I was able to get it back to my usual pink, soft lips (what I did is a story for another day).

Imagine my horror when this happens, I couldn’t go anywhere without putting on lipstick to cover the black lips.

I knew I couldn’t keep that up because it was making it worse, after a couple of weeks I stopped wearing any lipstick, except lip balm to keep my lip moisturized.

Someone actually asked me to take off the black lips since it wasn’t a good look for me, little did he know it wasn’t a black lipstick I had on but a reaction due to toxic ingredients.

How embarrassing!!

This episode ultimately birthed what we see today as Kharis Organics. It completely changed the way I looked at body care products. I  started researching and detoxing my body and skincare products.

When it came to body lotions and creams, I couldn’t find anything without toxic preservatives.

That’s when I remembered my Grandma’s go-to body moisturizer, Shea butter. I decided to look into the benefits of Shea butter and what I found amazed me.

I wondered why I hadn’t heard utilized all these years, I started whipping the butter with some oils, I shared it with family and some friends.

This became a staple however I realized it was lacking something so I went back to the drawing board.

I began researching the benefits of other kinds of butter, oils, and herbs for our skin.

That’s when I came across the huge benefits of mango butter, calendula, lemongrass, avocado oil among others.

I kept learning and researching and mixing up my recipes till I got the perfect mix. Shoutout to my family and friends for allowing me to use them as my experiments lol.

As a new mother I have come to appreciate the body soufflé even more because I want to ensure that I am using the best ingredients in our home.
